Do you ever catch yourself putting on a show during prayer? Trying to dress up your real struggles, desires, and feelings to appear more ‘fitting’ for the Lord?
Hear his voice: “drop the act.” He's not afraid of the conversation venturing beyond small talk. This pretending only serves to make your times with him superficial. He desires for you to pour it all out. He's not going to shrink away. Think about it: he already knows anyways, because he knows you more deeply than anyone could!
You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
The reason, then, for honest prayer is not to inform God about what's going on, but rather to build trust, transparency, and relationship. We all have a hunger for honesty in friendships, but God offers this to us on a much larger scale. He is the one who knows us most clearly and loves us most deeply.
I challenge you to take this step of honesty in prayer. Don't put up guards around your true feelings or thoughts. Don't dance around real issues with religious words. Just be up-front with him. He joyfully accepts all of who you are.
